The salade was considered the popular headpiece
for knights, men-at-arms and archers from the late 1400s through
the 1500s and many fine German and Milanese examples still exist
today in collections. For war purposes this helm was much preferred,
as it rested unaffixed allowing free movement of the head in
all directions and its arched tail design made it possible to
be worn thrown back upon the head when not in use. As a rule,
a collar (gorget) and mail was deemed sufficient protection for
the neck and worn with this style helm. This full size wearable
Gothic inspired Salade circa 1470-1500 helm is skillfully hand-crafted
of 18 gauge steel.
